ABOUT

David Dernie is an architect and painter whose work explores materials, space, experience and memory.

His paintings are layered assemblages. They combine natural pigments, fibres and found materials to forge textured surfaces that shift with light and scale. They create a play between the organic and the artisanal, the old and the new, the still and the shifting. They are meditative, puzzling and provocative.

His drawings and collages, a bridge between architectural and visual practice, combine mixed media to study form, image and imagination.

Dernie grew up in the north of England and studied architecture at the University of Cambridge. His work has been exhibited internationally and he has taught and published widely. He has lived in the UK, Italy and Hong Kong. His Montefanna studio is in Fiesole, Italy.
